Cornell - Soil and Crop Sciences Graduate Student Association
Bradfield Hall isn't the most conducive space for community interactions. I wouldn't trade my 9th floor views over Cayuga lake for anything, but it does take extra effort to interact with those outside your immediate lab group. One way we've collectively gotten around this is through the section's graduate student association. We are a pretty small and tight knit group of graduate students. We are never more than 15 or so with a few new arrivals and departures each year. Interests normally range from soil microbiology to weed science to international agriculture. Biweekly journal club meetings over dinner provide a chance for community building and support through the PhD dissertation journey. For a year (2017-2018), I served as the Treasurer and secured funding for our meet-ups as well as a co-sponsored speaker invitations to bring soil scientists to the BESS seminar series.
